Three from Carnegie Mellon Elected 2007 Fellows of Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers
Carnegie Mellon University faculty members John Lafferty, Chuck
Thorpe and Tsuhan Chen have have been elected 2007 Fellows of the Institute
of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The Institute represents
engineers, scientists and allied professionals whose technical interests are
rooted in electrical and computer sciences, engineering and related
disciplines. The IEEE has more than 360,000 members in 150 countries around
the world. Being named a Fellow is one of the organizationıs most
prestigious honors.
Lafferty, a professor of computer science and machine learning,
has been cited for his contributions to statistical pattern recognition and
statistical language processing, while Thorpe, a member of the Robotics
Institute faculty and dean of the universityıs Qatar campus, is being
recognized for his leadership in the research and development of
vision-based autonomous outdoor vehicles. Chen, a professor of electrical
and computer engineering and head of CITıs Advanced Multi-Processing
Laboratory, is being honored for his contributions in the area of
multidisciplinary multimedia signal processing.
